La communauté « bears » est apparue dans les années 1970 à San Francisco. Elle regroupe des gays poilus avec une barbe plutôt fournie. La plupart des bears sont plutôt enveloppés. Il est fréquent d’entendre les mots « chubby » ou big bear pour désigner un bear gros ou massif, un « Daddy » pour parler d’un bear de plus de cinquante ans.
