Fundoshi

Il y a quelques jours, en me promenant dans une librairie parisienne et en feuilletant l’ouvrage d’Agnès Giard L’imaginaire érotique au Japon (édition Albin Michel BD), j’ai appris le terme fundoshi. Ce mot définit un linge slip traditionnel porté par des Japonais pour témoigner leur témérité, à l’instar des Samurais. Hélas, après la seconde guerre mondiale, ils ont été remplacés par des slips américains, plus pratiques à porter. Aujourd’hui, ces cache-sexes traditionnels sont encore portés comme maillots de bain traditionnels ou pour certaines compétitions sportives. Les dessins érotiques SM de Gengoroh Tagame semblent suggérer que certains gays les arborent de nouveau pour marquer leur virilité.

Several days ago, I was wandering in a Parisian bookshop and discovered in the recently issued book by Agnès Giard L’imaginaire érotique au Japon (Erotic imaginative world in Japan) a new word fundoshi. It defines a traditional Japanese male loincloth. This underwear was worn by men to value their courage, like the Samurais. After the second world war, they have been replaced by more convenient American underpants. Fundoshi are still used as traditional swimsuits or sports underwear. The SM gay comics by Gengoroh Tagame may suggest that some gays wear them again as a symbol of masculinity.
